Clearwater-based Boos Development, the triple-tenant building's developer, declined to comment on the project, saying the company does not comment on ongoing projects.
City officials, however, said the developer intends to apply for building permits in October with an estimate of completing construction by February. Starbucks could open soon after, said city spokesman Vernon Stewart.
The coffee shop would span 2,200 square feet and occupy the eastern-most space. It would also feature a drive-thru. Retail stores, each 1,380 square feet, would inhabit the other two spaces. Stewart said the developer also mentioned that one of the additional retail locations could become another restaurant.
The Pensacola area consists of more than a dozen Starbucks, but locally owned shops, including Fosko Coffee Barre and Bodacious Brew, are more prevalent downtown.
Bodacious Brew's second location, which will include a drive-thru and walk-up coffee and smoothie shop, could open mid-December, manager Alan Bates said. It should expand the shop's customer base, providing easier access for customers unable to park or with dogs, he said.
Bates also expressed confidence that a new Starbucks within the vicinity would not diminish Bodacious Brew's customer base.
"I think they’ll do fine, but honestly, we’ll do fine here," he said.
